Interested in applying?
We would love to have you! Here's some more information about the program:
WHEN: The 2023-2024 CanU Education program will be held on Thursday evenings (5:00-8:00 pm) for six weeks: January 11-February 15, 2023.
WHERE: Most CanU academies will be held in the Education Building, although special arrangements may be possible if gym or kitchen or other specialized spaces may be necessary.
WHAT: That's up to you! Find others who share your interests and passions, or whose experiences complement yours and form a team. Then put together a proposal for a CanU Academy. Your proposal should outline a 5-week program that you design that will engage students in rich, hands-on learning experiences that develop their understandings of themselves and their relationships with the world around them: Sewing & fashion? Games & fitness? Escape rooms? Song writing? Spoken word? Arts & crafts? Photography? Film making? Environmental science? Public art? Engineering? A Social Justice Club? Teen Zine? Entrepreneurship? Podcasting? What can you imagine?
WHO: The CanU Aspire program is for students in Grades 7-9. The students will be joining our CanU academy program from over 20 different schools across several school divisions. Students are nominated by their teachers to participate. The program is intended to be inquiry- and activity-based, with students involved in developing new skills and interests through collaborating with you and one another. Each Academy will have about 12-15 students who will choose their Academies based on the short, engaging descriptions your team puts together.
WHY: CanU will enrich your experience as a Teacher Candidate. Here are a few reasons why B.Ed students participate:
Collaboration—This is a unique opportunity as a TC to plan and teach together with your peers across streams and years of the program.
Relationships—Because of the high student-adult ratio, you'll have an opportunity to focus on building relationships with students through the experiences you create together. You'll also get to know your colleagues in the B.Ed program in a different way by observing how they plan, interact with students, and you'll learn a lot about their strengths and interests!
Experience—This program will include students in Grades 7-9, which may offer you new or additional experiences with that age group. Early years? Come and try out working with this age group! You never know where your future will take you!
Fun—The focus is on fun and on designing experiential, engaging, and challenging activities for students. Over the years, B.Ed students have said their evenings in CanU are a highlight of their Winter term, if not their experience in the faculty.
Food & Reflection—After the students leave for the evening, we come together as a large group for food and for team debriefing discussions. You'll learn a lot from these discussions with your peers, but you'll also enjoy this time together.
